Where have SSD been build?

The technique of sand storage dams is not new: storage of rainfall and runoff, including sub-surface storage, for beneficial use has been applied since 9,000 BC (Oweis et al., 2001). Dams obstructing groundwater flow were constructed on the island of Sardinia in Roman times. Sand dams are well known in the Middle East and have been used for water supply in the southwestern United States and northern Mexico since the mid 1800s. Other examples come from Namibia (Stengel, 1968).

More recent projects found here:
* In Kitui District (Kenya) over 500 sand dams have been constructed successfully by the Sasol Foundation.
* In Borana Zone (Ethiopia) sand storage dams are introduced in 2007 within the SwissRe project of RAIN Foundation and Acacia Water in close cooperation with the Kenyan NGO Sasol and the Ethiopian NGOs EHRA and AFD.

Some projects are illustrated by short films:
* In March 2009 12 Ethiopian NGO’s were trained on site-selection, design and construction of sand dams, as a follow up of the SwissRe project.
* This shows an Excellent Development movie on sand dams in Kenya.
* This movie shows a story on sand dams in Kenya, a project of the National Council of Churches of Kenya (NCCK).
